The 5K benefits the Save Our Swinging Bridge.Org a 501c 3 nonprofit. This year participants helped raise approximately $4,000 to maintain the 121-year-old historic Androscoggin Pedestrian Swinging Bridge. The bridge was built by the same firm that designed and built the Brooklyn Bridge-the John A Roebling & Sons Co.

All participants received a beautifully designed t-shirt commemorating this event was produced by Artworks of Brunswick. "It was great to have a local company print the shirts right here in Brunswick," remarked Nancy E. Randolph, coordinator for the 5K. The Zukowsk, Carter, Priest, Spaeth, Machon and Jordon received baskets of gifts collected from local merchants and restaurants.

Businesses donating to the baskets were: New England Medical Fitness - Massage gift certificate (1-hr $65 value), New England Runner - One Year Subscription, Hannaford Supermarket $25 gift certificate, Wild Oats $10 certificate, Little Dog Coffee Shop-T-shirt, Reny's -Stainless Steel Sport Bottle, Wicked Joe Coffee-1-pound of Wicked French, Gelato Fiasco $5 certificate, Shift Sustainable Home Goods - $5 Gift Certificate, a Evening Star Cinema Movie Pass and Morning Glory-energy bars.

The top finisher of the 5K race in each age group received local restaurant and merchant $25 gift cards or certificates. Those restaurants were: Gelato Fiasco, Target, Bangkok Garden Restaurant, Frontier, Little Dog Coffee Shop, Henry & Marty, Applebees, Richards Restaurant, Bombay Mahal and Fairground Café.

The Androscoggin Pedestrian Swinging Bridge was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2004. It was built in 1892 to allow workers to go from the Topsham Heights neighborhood to Cabot mill in Brunswick. John A. Roebling & Sons Co., builders of the Brooklyn Bridge, was the designer and builder of the swinging bridge.

Between 1892 until the middle of the 20th century, the citizens of Topsham used the bridge on a regular basis to walk from their homes to work, shop, attend school and mass at Brunswick's St. John the Baptist parish.
